Pouya Jahanshahi is an Iranian-born graphic designer, scholar, and curator, currently an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Oklahoma State University, an endowed professor at the Global Studies, and the director of the MFA program. He earned his MA in Graphic Design at California State University of Fullerton (CSUF), focusing on the Anatomy of a Visual Message and semiotics of time-based media. As an Art Director, he engaged in the commercial sphere of design and advertising in Southern California. Returning to academia, he earned his MFA in Graphic Design and Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). His research inquired about the global development of what he has termed Hybrid Visual Cultures. He has presented on such related issues internationally in venues including ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale’), IGDS (Iranian Graphic Design Society), and MODE Summit (Motion In Design Education), and College Arts Association (CAA), amongst others. He is the co-founder of Pasaj Collaborative and Local-Not-Local art and design collaboratives. As a Design Activist, his curated 20x20 Posters For Peace collection is now being exhibited across the globe, disseminating the message of peace. While working with a broad range of cultural organizations and clientele, he pursues his silk screening and concrete poetry hobbies – when time permits.

"REMIXING DESIGN AS A RADICAL ACT"

Kelly Walters is an interdisciplinary designer and research scholar whose work engages with histories of Black American print publishing, material culture, and archival practice. She explores these themes in her studio practice, Bright Polka Dot, and looks closely at the impact of colonization on the formation of Black design. Her publications include Black, Brown + Latinx Design Educators: Conversations on Design and Race and the award-winning The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection. Kelly Walters is currently an Associate Professor of Communication Design and Director of the BFA Communication Design program at Parsons School of Design at The New School.

Arzu Ozkal's "Socially Engaged Design"
November 7th 2024, at 5 pm
Arzu Ozkal, co-editor of Cabaret Voltaire: Fluxus West, San Diego, and Southern California Mail Art, and Gün: Women's Networks, is a Turkish-born designer and researcher based in San Diego, CA. Dedicated to fostering collaboration and inclusivity, Ozkal's practice critically engages with socially engaged design and cultural issues.
She holds an MFA from the University at Buffalo, SUNY and a BFA from Bilkent University. Ozkal's work has been exhibited and recognized globally, with her pieces being included in collections across the country.

James Grady's "Cultivating Creativity Through The Crossroads of Interdisciplinary Design"

James Grady is a designer and educator with over two decades of experience. He is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Boston University and Principal of Design Axl, a global graphic design consultancy. Since 2017, James has taught undergraduate and graduate students at BU and co-teaches Spark! Product Innovation at the Center for Data Sciences, where he also serves as Creative Director. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration across various BU colleges.
James co-authored a grant from Digital Learning & Innovation to bring an artist in residence to BU’s School of Visual Arts, Theatre, and Faculty of Computing & Data Science. Before joining BU, he co-taught Information Design at MIT and held senior roles at kor group and Fathom Information Design, leading projects for clients like Google, GE, Nike, and Volkswagen.
James earned his MFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and his BFA in Digital Media from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. His interdisciplinary approach drives his research, teaching, and creative practice, providing a platform to explore new ideas in design and inspire students to innovate.
Anna Jordan's "Everything Is An Art Supply"

Anna Jordan is a graphic designer and educator in Rochester, New York, USA. Her award-winning book cover designs explore theintersection of typography and materials. Many pieces are made using her unique design process of analog-digital synthesis. In 2025, PRINT Magazine named Anna one of the best New Visual Artists: 15 Under 30. Her work is exhibited internationally and featured in many design publications. Anna earned her BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of the Arts. She has taught graphic design at Maryland Institute College of Art, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Rochester Institute of Technology where she is currently Assistant Professor in the MFA Visual Communication Design program.
